Some Illustration Work

Occasionally I am able to get one of my illustrations in print. Usually time doesn't allow, so I work with a lot of talented illustrators from around the world. Here are some of my random pieces. Most hang in my house.

I had been trying to find a piece of art for a long wall in my living room. Never found anything I liked so I painted this retro surfing montage. 7' X 5.5'. Acrylics.

Found a cute photo in a Life magazine years ago. I loved it so much that I illustrated it. 4.5' X 3.5'. Water color and pencil.

An illustration as an ode to my favorite beach: Folly.
Insets are my brother, myself, and my sister playing at Folly beach. Detail of my brother below. About 4' X 3'. Pencil

Some Collateral Work: Charleston Fashion Week 2011

At Charleston magazine we design a lot more than editorial. We are ramping up for the magazine's largest annual event: Charleston Fashion Week. A really fun five day event with runway shows, model competition, emerging designer competition, and more.

I created a system so that throughout the year the look would stay consistent, but also allow for any of the three designers to design something without starting from scratch.
We do everything from posters to business cards to signage.

Recent Work: Charleston Magazine

Love this feature we did on local chef Sean Brock of McCrady's.
Check out a photo gallery of his tattoo "sleeve" that we posted on our site.

Just shipped the October issue of Charleston Magazine. Our "outdoor" issue.

Some Feature Openers

Photographs by Peter Frank Edwards

Painting by Wilfred Spoon

Project Asylum

Portrait of a Warrior
I had this idea to make the headline look like a warrior ripped right across the pages. I did a simple sketch and then worked with my assistant art director, Camilla, until we came to this final version. I even ripped paper to see how the shadows reacted to lighting.

New Work: Charleston Magazine September 2010

Industrial Evolution: Photographs by Tim Hussey
This is the opener for the fashion feature running in this issue. I thought rivets would be a great type treatment. The entire page was put together in Photoshop.

See the flip book at http://www.charlestonmag.com/charleston_magazine/feature/industrial_evolution

This feature is about Frank Abagnale, an imposter from years ago. He posed as a doctor, a teacher, and even an airline pilot. The film "Catch Me if You Can," starring Leo de Caprio and directed by Stephen Spielberg, is about him. Since he was also great at forgery and had the FBI after him for years he became a specialist working with them after he was finally caught. Now he's is a forgery specialist which is why I designed the page to look like an official document with engraving filigree on official paper. Redesign of Charleston Home Magazine

I worked with my amazing editor, Ellen McGauley, and our small (but incredible!) design team (Julie Wood, Ivy Deitch, and Camilla Nilsson) to completely revamp our regional shelter title this past year to include more of what readers were craving: Food/recipes, beautiful houses, home tips, and local resources, all on more of a friendly and approachable level.

We create every project and do all of the styling ourselves...all within the confines of an insanely small budget. And without running any advertorial or paid “product placements.”

We were amazed after the redesign when we heard that our newsstand sell-through rate had doubled.
