Some Past Work: The Music Famers Almanac

Found some fun stuff from a few years back. I designed and produced a digest size magazine called The Music Farmers Almanac for a local music venue in downtown Charleston. Each issue was about 32 pages chock full of editorial about bands and concert dates. One of the fun aspects of this particular title was that I designed all of the ads which was a lot of fun. Since the audience was about 21-30 it gave me a lot of freedom to play.

This double page ad won Best of Show at the Addys which was great because there was zero budget and I literally created it in about an hour. My publisher came up with the text and I did the illustrations.


I also did the illustrations for this ad for Arizona Bar & Grill.


Arizona Bar & Grill's new chef's name was Dave. Hence, "Dave on the range."


Just something fun I did with available textures. Some of the floral patterns were from the vest I was wearing that day.

December is our annual food issue, and it's probably my favorite issues when it comes to designing features. Great food pics and fabulous recipes.

A layout like this can take a while. LOTS of moving parts and only about a week or so to get the design done.

Some Illustration Work

Occasionally I am able to get one of my illustrations in print. Usually time doesn't allow, so I work with a lot of talented illustrators from around the world. Here are some of my random pieces. Most hang in my house.

I had been trying to find a piece of art for a long wall in my living room. Never found anything I liked so I painted this retro surfing montage. 7' X 5.5'. Acrylics.




Found a cute photo in a Life magazine years ago. I loved it so much that I illustrated it. 4.5' X 3.5'. Water color and pencil.

Some Collateral Work: Charleston Fashion Week 2011

At Charleston magazine we design a lot more than editorial. We are ramping up for the magazine's largest annual event: Charleston Fashion Week. A really fun five day event with runway shows, model competition, emerging designer competition, and more.

I created a system so that throughout the year the look would stay consistent, but also allow for any of the three designers to design something without starting from scratch.
We do everything from posters to business cards to signage.

Portrait of a Warrior
I had this idea to make the headline look like a warrior ripped right across the pages. I did a simple sketch and then worked with my assistant art director, Camilla, until we came to this final version. I even ripped paper to see how the shadows reacted to lighting.
